COALMINE IN DECAZEVILLE

Coal
was exploited either by digging shafts and galleries or
in open cast mining. This old, exceptionnally large open-cast
coalmine was exploited from 1892 to 2001.

Each side of the monument
has a bronze plaque representing peace, war, soldiers
and coalminers. Above there is a miner's lamp.

The
village is situated in a confined and picturesque gorge.
It is a region of market gardenning and wine. Slate roof and typical
architecture.

Unique
village for its double identity. St Santin is situated on
two departments: Cantal and Aveyron and on two regions :
Midi-Pyrénées and Auvergne.
So, we discover here two kinds of architecture.

17th century.

The Lot was an important waterway which allowed to
transport goods to Bordeaux : merrains of sweet chestnut
trees, coal of Decazeville... Today, with the future Lot
rive navigable, works are in progress to rehabilitate the
existing locks and create new one.
